Where to Stay in Kyoto
(2024 Edition)

October 15, 2024

On my recent trip to Japan, I was thrilled by the different hotel options in Kyoto. I had the pleasure of staying at two properties and visiting a total of five. Here is a brief overview of what I experienced and who I think these properties are right for!

A Closer Look:

I’ll start with my personal favorite, the Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto. The location alongside the Kamogawa River was peaceful and equally well appointed. We were just a quick walk to Gion but felt a world away from the hustle & bustle. If you consider staying here, there is only one way to do it and that is by facing the River. The Grand Deluxe River View rooms starts at around 560 sq ft and are beautifully furnished.

I deeply appreciated the hotel’s strong commitment to local artisans and craftsman. You can see local’s work everywhere throughout the hotel – the lighting design, the framed textiles, the large chandeliers – all made in Kyoto or the nearby countryside. This Ritz-Carlton is continuously ranked as one of the finest in the collection and there is little doubt as to why that is.

Next, I visited and stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto. This is an stunning oasis and they pride themselves on “maximizing kutsurogi, the art of relaxation”. It offers diverse cuisine options and the famous Four Seasons breakfast truly does not disappoint here! Who is this for? Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto is wonderful for families or for those who are visiting Kyoto for a second or third time.

One of the most unique hotels I saw was Shinmozen, which opened in 2022. Designed by the masterful Tadao Ando, it boasts only 9 rooms. Everywhere you turn there is incredible contemporary art. The biggest surprise? Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten curated a special menu just for Shinmozen and it’s served in an intimate dining room. Reservations are not easy, but we can help with that! This is a perfect fit for a romantic getaway or for those who have a deep appreciation for art.

Where else do we send our clients?

Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Spa | incredible location across from Nijo Castle. This is very comfortable, well appointed option. It was recently awarded the highest Three Michelin Key hotel distinction.

Six Senses Kyoto | the newest kid on the block. This property has incredible on-property offerings including spa, an “Earth Lab”, great dining and even an alchemy bar. I would advise staying at least one extra day to really enjoy these offerings.

AMAN Kyoto | a stand alone destination that is outside the city center. This property is surrounded by ancient woodlands – an oasis for true mindfulness activities and cultural experiences.

Let us help you make the right choice for your next trip! Our preferred partnerships allow for added benefits during your stay at any of these luxury properties and our deep relationships allow for the most memorable, personalized stays.
